A. Travel nowadays is very difficult to achieve without a credit card. Hotels will generally want a credit card upon check-in, against which they will lodge your extras, car hire companies demand a credit card in order to safeguard them against damages, theft etc. Whilst not impossible, it is highly recommended that you travel with a credit card, and more than one would be an advantage (MasterCard and Visa).
A. It is generally requested when applying for a visa, however, should you not require a visa, the ability to travel without insurance is possible. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS. We strongly advise all client to take out comprehensive travel insurance for all trips.
A. Tours and excursions can be pre-booked through United Europe before you travel. If you prefer to book your tours during your stay, the front desk or concierge at your hotel will be happy to assist.
A. Everyone has their own style and rate of travel spending. A minimum of 45 – 70 Euros per person per day is recommended – but again, this will obviously vary depending on your individual tastes and habits.
A. It is important to find out what type(s) of foreign exchange product(s) is accepted in the country you are visiting, as this will help you to decide which travel forex product to use. For example, some countries do not accept Travellers Cheques and/or may not have the infrastructure that enables them to accept cards for making payments. For these countries it would be preferable to take cash. Where possible it is a good idea to carry a mixed purse of products - cash to pay for things such as taxi fares, a TravelWallet card or Travellers Cheques, and your debit or credit card as a back-up option.
A. If your passport is lost or stolen while you are travelling abroad, report the loss/theft immediately to the local police station. Take a copy of the police report to the nearest South African Embassy where you will apply for a temporary passport/emergency travel document. It is also advisable to keep electronic and paper copies of your passport, and other necessary documents, safe but accessible to you while away (eg with a family member at home).
A. All foreign exchange transactions in South Africa are subject to exchange control regulations, which are governed by the South African Reserve Bank.

Here are the main rules in place for South Africans wanting to travel:
• A single discretionary allowance of R1 000 000 per calendar year, for residents over the age of 18 years. This allowance may be used for travel, donations, gifts, study allowance, alimony and child support, wedding expenses, foreign capital allowance and maintenance payments, provided the amount does not exceed the limit of R1 000 000 per calendar year.
• Children under the age of 18 years qualify for a travel allowance of R200 000 per calendar year.
• Foreign currency for travel purposes may not be bought more than 60 days prior to the departure of the traveller. For travel purposes, a valid air ticket must be presented, indicating that the journey commences from South Africa and such allowance may not be issued more than 60 days prior to departure.
• Travellers must convert unused foreign exchange within 30 days of returning to South Africa.
• The costs of land arrangements (hotels, cruises, tours, etc.) form part of your travel allowance, but the payment of airfares do not.
• Using your credit card while travelling abroad forms part of your travel allowance.
• In addition, each traveller may take R25 000 in South African Reserve bank notes when visiting abroad.
• Where the insurance value of your personal belongings, not for sale, exceeds R50 000 you will need an NEP form attested by a bank or by Customs and Excise. Please enquire at your nearest Foreign exchange outlet should you need this form.
• If you use your credit card to purchase goods and services online from another country, the value should not exceed R20,000
• South African residents also have an investment allowance of R4 million per calendar year to invest abroad. Should you want to use this allowance you need to provide the bank with a tax clearance certificate issued by SARS.
A. Anyone who intends travelling abroad should have a valid passport. Your passport should be valid for at least. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the intended date of departure and should also have at least two blank pages for entry stamps. South Africans require visas for most International destinations.

In order to obtain a visa you will require the following documents:
• Copy of confirmed, pre-paid accommodation for the entire stay abroad
• Original return air ticket
• Travel insurance policy for the full duration of the trip
• 3 Months original bank statements showing sufficient funds for travel
• If employed (and/or self-employed) an original letter from the employer is required stating position held, period of employment, exact dates of your leave & expected date of return; for scholars or students, a letter stating the applicant is enrolled will be returning & expected date of return.

It is always advisable to keep electronic and paper copies of your passport, and all other documents, safe but accessible to you while away (eg with a family member at home).
A. When leaving South Africa with children, parents or guardians must be able to produce unabridged birth certificates reflecting the details of both parents, as well as a valid passport for each child. (This requirement applies even when both parents are travelling with their children.)

• If children are travelling with a guardian, this adult is required to produce affidavits from both parents giving permission for the children to travel. They will also need copies of the passports of the parents, as well as the contact details of the parents.
• If children are travelling with only one parent, they must produce an unabridged birth certificate as well as:
• a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship in respect of the child, if he or she is the parent or legal guardian of the child;
• an affidavit from the other parent granting permission for the child to leave the country; • a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship in respect of the child; and
• if applicable, the death certificate of the other parent registered on the birth certificate.

When a child is travelling as an unaccompanied minor, he or she must be able to produce:
• proof of consent (a letter or affidavit) from both his or her parents or legal guardians to travel in or out of the country; and
• a letter from the person who will receive the child in South Africa, including that person's full contact details and a copy of their passport or ID book. The letter must also include details about where the child will be staying, and full contact details of both parents or legal guardians.

A. Not necessary to reconfirm your flight – However, we strongly recommend that you can check in on line, 24 hours prior to departure. Make sure you have your surname of all party members and the reference number close by.
A. Please advise your travel agent if you have a specific seat / meal preference. Meals must be requested at least 72 hours before departure, specific meal requests will not be confirmed if requested at the airport.
A. No smoking is allowed on the plane.
A. Domestic – 1 hour, Regional – 1 ½ to 2 hours prior, International Europe – 2 hours prior, USA – 3 hours prior. Use these as guidelines only, we suggest adding 1 hour to each of these recommended times.
Domestic – if you miss your outgoing flight, you can still make use of your return ticket.

Yes it is possible to upgrade your seat at the airport – please keep in mind that this is always subject to availability and that you might have to pay in any additional money that might be required for the upgraded seat.

A. An e-ticket is an electronic record that holds the information previously held on a paper ticket and stores it securely on a database. Electronic tickets follow IATA global standards and are therefore compatible with ground handling, distribution and accounting processes used by the global community of airlines.
A. Yes. “Ticketless” is basically a way of recording the sale and is used typically by low cost airlines on point to point travel. It does not conform to industry electronic ticketing standards and therefore cannot be used for journeys involving two or more airlines.
A. Yes. E-ticketing was first introduced by the airline industry back in 1995. It is a process that has been tried, tested and widely appreciated in many markets. By introducing e-ticketing, all fraud related to paper tickets is automatically eliminated. The electronic ticket sits safely on the airline’s secured database. However, consumers should make sure they buy tickets from a trusted supplier – either directly from the airline or from an IATA accredited travel agent.
A. No. While the Internet is both a sales and distribution channel, the e-ticket purchase can be done by phone or at a ticket office. The itinerary receipt can be mailed, sent by fax or e-mail, or picked up at a ticketing location.
A. At check-in, passengers can present a valid ID such as a passport, an ID card, driver's license or credit card. Passengers should always be provided with an itinerary receipt. And IATA recommends that passengers take the itinerary receipt with them when they travel.
A. Most airports do not need any documentation to gain access to the check-in area where airline agents are able to inspect e-ticket records in their computer systems. However, some airports do restrict access to the check-in area. In those airports, a passenger using an e-ticket may be identified from a preprinted list or simply be asked to show an itinerary/receipt.

A. The World Health Organization (WHO) publishes a manual called ''International Travel and Health'' which is a good resource for travellers. The second chapter of the manual deals with modes of travel and health considerations; it provides a very clear general overview of health and wellbeing in air travel. The manual features a range of topics such as cabin air pressure, flight phobia, communicable diseases, etc. and also includes a list of precautions to take while travelling.

A. It’s important to ask your airline or travel agent when you purchase your ticket as the free baggage allowance can vary by airline, routing and class of fare. Free allowance baggage is generally defined as those items necessary for the passenger's journey, such as clothing and personal articles within certain limitations.
A. IATA has guidelines for baggage but the number and weight of baggage allowed free of charge can vary by airline, routing and fare. The "piece concept" defines the number of bags entitled by the passenger's ticket. Generally, two pieces of checked baggage are allowed per passenger, each piece weighing a maximum of 32 kilos (70 lb) and measuring no more than 158 cm (62 in) adding the dimensions: height + width + length. But check with the carrier because some airlines/airports have limits per bag which may be lower and for journeys with a single carrier, there may also be baggage limitation. The "piece concept" is generally in use on flights within, to and from Canada and the United States.
A. The "weight concept" defines the amount of baggage entitled by the passenger's ticket in kilos. For example, an economy class passenger may be entitled to 20 kilos of baggage and a business class passenger to 30 kilos. For safety considerations and in order to avoid inconvenience at the airport, make sure that your suitcase doesn't weigh more than a maximum of 32 kilos (70lbs). If it does you will be asked to repack and transfer some of your belongings into another bag. Please note that the maximum weight limit relates only to single items and does not affect the baggage allowance or excess baggage charges, which are set by individual airlines. However, some airlines/airports may have limits per bag which are lower, and for journeys with a single carrier, there may also be baggage limitation. Therefore, check with your carrier in advance.
A. Carry-on baggage must be stowed in the aircraft cabin which limits baggage to a size, weight and shape to fit under a passenger seat or in a storage compartment. Cabin baggage should have maximum length of 22 in (56 cm), width of 18 in (45 cm) and depth of 10 in (25 cm). These dimensions include wheels, handles, side pockets, etc. Baggage allowed onboard may vary from one to two pieces per passenger. Check with your airline as to what is allowed.
A. Actually, globally 98.2% of all baggage travels with the passenger as planned. And the vast majority of bags that are mishandled are returned to the passenger within 48 hours. This does not detract from the fact that arriving without your baggage is a significant inconvenience. Many baggage mishandlings occur at the transfer point due to punctuality issues, and these are often caused by air traffic control congestion. Sometimes it is simply not possible to move the bags between flights in the time available. IATA and its members continue to work hard to improve baggage performance further.
A. The International Civil Aviation Organisation, the UN’s aviation standard-setting body, has defined guidelines that more and more governments are adopting. The current restrictions for liquids, aerosols and gels from ICAO and in effect in most many countries are that they must be in containers 100ml or equivalent, placed in a transparent resealable plastic bag with max capacity 1-litre. At screening, plastic bags should be presented apart from other carry-on items.
A. Yes, a few. Medications, baby milk/foods, special dietary requirements are exempt. Consult your local airport’s website for more information.
A. Passengers should ask and make sure the liquid products they are buying will not be confiscated later on in their trip. Different countries have different requirements and determine if duty free purchased in another country is allowed or not. In certain countries, it will be placed in a sealed tamper-evident bag, with the proof of purchase. This is meant to allow the passenger’s purchases to go through other airports without being confiscated, although this needs an agreement between the countries concerned.
A. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. RFID is a technology incorporated into a silicon chip embedded in a tag. The tag can be updated with new information, which is the main difference from other technologies used such as bar code. This means that new information can be updated on an item’s tag as it travels around different locations. The technology also allows for tags to be read from a distance, through most substances, and for multiple tags to be read at one time, making it ideal for environments where items are stored in piles.
A. It is part of the solution. RFID can fix about 20% of baggage mishandling issues. The IATA business case showed that this was economically feasible, and the baggage improvement programme is now looking to address the use of RFID and also tackle the other 80% of mishandling issues. It’s important to understand that over 98% of baggage arrives at its destination with the passenger as planned!
A. First, you report it to the baggage claims department on arrival. There you will provide information to the airline to help them track down your baggage. Most airlines use a global system called WorldTracer which a joint product provided by IATA and SITA, a technology group that is owned by airlines. All missing baggage information is filed on this system. Once a match is found, the baggage is returned to its owner. The vast majority of mishandled luggage is returned to the passenger within 48 hours.
A. Make sure your baggage is not overweight. Check before flying as baggage weight allowances vary by airline but as a general rule if you can't lift your bag, it is likely airline staff won't be able to either.
A. Please pack your bag uniformly. Heavy and dense objects can cause the bag to move as well as delays at security.

• Please remove any labels and tags from previous flights.
• Please place a luggage label on one handle of your bag.
• Does your bag have wheels? Please lock them, if possible, to prevent movement after check-in.
• Does your travel insurance cover the cost of replacing the contents of your bag and the bag itself?
• Have you listed the contents of your bag in case you need to make an insurance claim?
• Is your bag over-packed? Please use another bag if this one was hard to close.
• If you have straps on your bag please remove them and place them in your bag.
• Please do not lock your bag as it may need to be searched.
A. When collecting the vehicle, the principal driver will need to take the confirmation voucher or E-Voucher, their full driving license and deposit requirements (a credit card with enough facility available to cover the deposit requirements). If you have requested or will request additional drivers, they'll also need to take their driving license(s).
When collecting the vehicle, you will be required to leave a deposit; this deposit ensures that the customer can cover any damage to the vehicle and / or equipment. This is standard practice with all car rental companies, and usually takes the form of an amount blocked on the principal driver's credit card. Please Note: additional extras can also carry additional deposit requirements.
The principal driver must have been in possession of a valid driving license for at least two years.

If you have endorsements on your license, or your license has previously been revoked, please contact a representative, who will be happy to assist. The International Driving License (IDL) is not required where English is the primary spoken language of the country. The requirement for the IDL will be clearly shown during the booking process and on your rental documentation. SOUTH AFRICA is not considered to be a country were English is the primary spoken language. Whilst not requested by many Car Hire outlets, we strongly recommend that you obtain an IDL as it may assist in any claims you have with insurance should any unfortunate issues arise. Please Note: An expired driving license or a provisional license will not be accepted.

The International Driving License is issued by the Automobile Association of South Africa. Always ensure that you have both your original driver’s license as well as your IDP with you and keep copies (preferably certified copies) separate from the originals.
Whilst United Europe provides fairly inclusive rates, there are occasions where there will be fees payable at the rental counter. Any mandatory fees (non extras) will be clearly shown during the booking process and in your rental documentation. These could include but are not limited to: Facility Charge – An airport fee to contribute towards building facilities.

Winterisation Fee – To cover the cost of additional equipment over the winter period.

Any other items that you choose at the rental counter.

All additional extras are paid for at the rental counter and exclude VAT. If you require additional extras (including but not limited to: child seats; GPS; additional drivers; snow chains; snow tyres and ski racks) request it with us and we can pass the information on, this however does not guarantee that a GPS (or other material item) will be waiting for you.
An additional fee will apply and this will be paid at the rental counter (unless specified on the confirmation voucher).All persons driving the vehicle must be in possession of their driving license at all times.
If this service is available at your chosen destination, there may be an additional charge for it, which will be paid for at the rental counter. We will advise you whether a charge will apply when you confirm your pick-up / drop-off times in your booking request.
Should your travel plans include driving outside the country of rental, crossing borders or travelling to different islands within the same country, please advise our team at least 7 days prior to collecting the vehicle. Restrictions may apply for certain countries and we may need to advise the car rental company. In some cases, it may be necessary to purchase additional insurance cover, which will be paid for at the rental counter, and our team will advise if this applies in your case.

Please Note: it is not possible to do international one-way rentals starting from the UK.
The minimal age of a renter is usually 21 and the maximum is usually 70. For a young driver, who is usually from 21 years of age and younger than 25, an additional payment is required for an appropriate insurance supplement.
Traffic laws vary from country to country, and the renter has the duty to verify these laws and act in accordance therewith. Payment of traffic fines and parking tickets, including special handling fees collected by the car supplier, road tolls, government surcharges, stickers for traveling on highways which can be purchased at border stations (for example, in Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovenia, etc.), a sticker for "green" traveling in city centers etc., are usually not included in the voucher and are the sole responsibility of the renter. Make no mistake, failure to pay any violations will result ultimately in a summons issued here in South Africa.
Each car rental company has its own Fuel Policy, which is visible during the booking process. It will also be displayed on your confirmation voucher and on the rental agreement at the rental counter. If you are renting for 3 days or less, you should highlight this to the car rental company at the time of renting in case they can work out an alternative fuel plan with you. Most of the car rental companies require a deposit at the start of the rental to cover fuel. Provided the car is returned in accordance with the fuel policy, this deposit will be refunded when returning the car.

NO-SHOWS: This is where the vehicle cannot be picked up due to: insufficient documentation; failure to provide a valid credit card containing sufficient funds to cover the deposit amount; and / or failure to collect the car at the specified time / date. Refunds will not be given for no-shows.

A. Be sure to research the insurance coverage available on your current rental policy prior to picking up your rental car. This will help you make the most informed decision about optional coverages offered at the rental counter.

What insurance does my rental have?
Most rentals include Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection. Your inclusions will be shown in the terms and conditions during the booking process, and also on the confirmation voucher.

Your vehicle is insured, but there is an excess. When collecting the vehicle you will be required to leave a deposit to the value of any insurance excess by our car rental partner, which covers costs if the vehicle is damaged during the rental. The maximum excess will be shown in the terms and conditions during the booking process.

What is an excess?
Excess is the amount that you will be liable for in case of accidental damage. This is standard practice with all car rental companies.

A security deposit is normally equal to the excess amount that will be blocked on the principal driver's credit card / debit card. This will be held for the duration of the rental and can take up to 7 working days to be released after the rental is completed.

It may be possible to reduce the excess on the vehicle by purchasing additional coverage from the car rental company at their counter.

What is Collision Damage Waiver?
Collision Damage Waiver is usually included in the price of your rental. It provides cover for damage that occurs to the vehicle itself. This means that the car you're driving is covered - however, there is almost always an excess and in most destinations there are exclusions to your cover. Items such as windscreens, tyres, undercarriage, replacement locks, replacement keys and towing charges are often not covered by the CDW. Please check your confirmation voucher under the "What's Included" section.

What is Theft Protection?
Theft Protection reduces the renter's liability in the event of theft, attempted theft, or damages caused due to theft of the vehicle to an excess amount, where applicable. Negligence connected with the theft of the vehicle may lead to the car rental company requiring the full amount for the cost of the vehicle.

Inspect the condition of your rental car; get to know the features.
Take a few minutes before leaving the rental location to familiarise yourself with where everything is on your rental car. Check the headlights, hazards, windscreen wipers, door locks, spare tyre, etc. Take a walk around your rental car with an agent before you leave the rental location.

Be sure to make a note of any scratches, dents, etc. and report them so there is no confusion regarding the car’s condition upon return. It may be advisable to take photographs of the rental car before pick-up and after drop-off.
A. United Europe acts as a car rental agent. Bookings made through us are subject to our terms and conditions.These cover your agreement with us and will be provided with your rental documentation, as well as being available on our website.

The actual rental of your vehicle will then be subject to the law of the country in which it is supplied to you and for this reason you will be required to sign a rental contract with the rental company. You should be content that you understand (and agree to) the terms and conditions of the contract.
A. Be sure to return your rental car at the time and date stated on your confirmation voucher, to avoid charges for extra hours and / or extra days. Also see your rental agreement for rates on additional hours / days.
A. In the case of breakdown, an accident or mechanical difficulties, you must call the car rental company immediately. The car hire company must give authority for repairs or replacement cars. Keep copies of all relevant documentation you are asked to complete. This may be needed if you wish to make an insurance claim. For accidents, a police report and an incident report from the car rental counter will be required.
A. Rentals are calculated based on exact pick up and return times reflected on your voucher. We are unable to refund any unused time.
A. There can be a number of reasons for local charges, including but not limited to: refueling charges, additional extras, parking tickets and fines, damage to the vehicle.

Your documentation from the car rental company should list the charges.

Should you be unable to understand the documentation, please contact our office who will be happy to assist you, by liaising with the supplier on your behalf?
A. You can amend your booking, please contact us. United Europe does not charge administration fees to amend / change bookings. However, changing your booking may trigger a Rate / Price change, or a charge which may be due from a material change, such as the duration or car type.
A. If you have a query about a completed rental, please contact us.
A. The Eurail Select Pass is valid on trains operated by the national railways of the three to five bordering countries you select. However, some trains require seat reservations. For example, for many high-speed services, international trains, scenic trains and all night trains, an advance reservation is compulsory.
A.Refund policies for tickets will vary depending on the type of train and fare that are booked. Please check with the United Europe consultant you are dealing with, in order to understand specific refund information for the fare you are purchasing. If you have already purchased your tickets, please review the terms and conditions that came with your documents. Except for PayPal, for which the amount can be reimbursed automatically on the PayPal account. For all the other payment services, a BIC (Bank Identifier Code) must be sent to receive the reimbursement of your purchase.
A. A pass holder is a reduced fare that can be purchased in place of a ticket. It requires the use of 1 day on a rail pass and is generally required for high-speed trains.
A. Gatwick Express arrives in London's Victoria Station.
A. Sleeper accommodations vary according to amenities and the number of people occupying the compartment. The name or number advises how many beds are in each room. A couchette (pronounced "koo-SHET") is normally usually in 2nd Class. A couchette accommodates 6 passengers, male and female, and offers no amenities. A. No, travel on Eurostar requires a separate ticket. However, many rail passes include discounted rates for the Eurostar called a Pass holder fare. To see a list of passes that allow these fares select "details" when viewing fares with a pass.
A. Your Eurail Select pass must be validated by a railway official in one of the countries mentioned on the Eurail Select Pass (station’s desk) who also fills your first and last day of travel in the passport number.
A. The term "Gender Specific" means that these compartments will not allow male and female passengers to travel in the same compartment. The exception to this condition is if you and your travel companion(s) intend on using all beds within the compartment. Trains in which this condition applies are: Elipsos, CNL, Lusitania, Spanish Night trains.
A. Located in the middle of the train (carriage 4 or 14), TGV Lyria bar provides a service for tasty snacks and meals: sandwiches, hot/cold local dishes, salads, children’s menu, hot and cold drinks, treats are available to eat at the bar or take away. In First class, you can also enjoy the convenience of Lyriapremière service at seat.
A. You can get free (or cheap) boat trips, discounts on rail travel, free admission in museums, a 50% discount on mountain top excursions and more. You can obtain these benefits locally by showing your Swiss pass, or you can contact the specific benefit company in advance. The discount benefits apply during the validity of your Swiss pass, whereas free passage on trains, buses or ferries is only valid on travel days.
A. First class on the TGV offers large comfortable reclining seats and a bar-buffet car offering a selection of food and beverages for purchase. When Premier service is offered for this train the service includes meal service and access to the TGV lounge at the train stations. Second class on the TGV Med offers generous legroom and a bar-buffet car offering a selection of food and beverages for purchase.
A. Thalys trains offer two classes of travel: 1st class with Comfort 1 and 2nd class with Comfort 2. In Comfort 1, reclining seats will offer you a high level of comfort. Sockets for laptop or mobile phone are also available on some carriages as well as free newspapers on major routes. Wi-Fi is free in Thalys Comfort 1 and in 2nd class with flexible tickets. In 2nd class (Comfort 2), you will get access to a bar-buffet car offering food and refreshments for purchase. Wi-Fi is available at an additional cost in second class for more restrictive tickets.
A. You can travel in first or second class. It depends on the classes of services which correspond to your German Rail Pass. In the ExpressBus to/from Munich to Prague, only 2nd class is available.
A. Showers facilities are generally not offered on trains in Europe. However, private showers can sometimes be found with premier overnight trains such as the Elipsos between France and Spain when the Premier fares are booked.
A. Many trains such as the Eurostar offer discounted tickets for advance purchase. These fares have limited availability and sell out quickly. To receive the best price on the train you want to travel on you should purchase your tickets prior to your departure so you can avoid fully booked trains.
A. The Eurail Italy Pass is the best choice if you want to spend your time exploring Italy. Eurail Italy pass is valid for one month, and the number of travel days available varies from 3 to 10 days.
